Big crowd at Mt Lawn for Fan Appreciation Night

One of the largest crowds of the season was at Mt Lawn on Saturday night to take advantage of $5 tickets, $1 hotdogs and several extra activities.

The evening started with qualifications at 6:15 with the first event, the on track auto autograph session getting underway at 7:30.  The Big Wheel races were next followed by the nickel scramble and a peddle car race.

Racing started at 8:30 with the heat races for the UMRA midgets and the Indy FasKarts.  Jason Goff of Fortville won the first heat with Oogie Goff of Fortville taking the second.  In the Indy FasKart heat Josh McQueary of Middletown took the win.

Next up were Street Drags with New Castle’s Scott Razor once again taking the win.  After Street Drags Hector and handler Jason Williams of the Henry County Sheriffs Department took center stage to the delight of the crowd.  As decoy Derek Hall, a Knightstown K-9 officer, rode around the track in the back of a pick up truck Hector was in his K-9 vehicle following close behind with sirens blaring.  As the two vehicles stopped Hall attempted to make his escape by running away but was soon brought down by a flying tackle from Hector.  Hector got another opportunity to take Hall down and did so with speed and power.

The Indy FasKart feature was next with McQueary once again taking the top spot over Larry Keene of Brownsburg.  Ron Taylor of Beech Grove was third followed by Jon Farina, Daniel Pierce, Jerry Fredrick, Randy Anderson, Ross McClymonds and Josh Sutter.

In the first feature event of the night for the stock cars John Massengale of New Castle picked up the first feature win of his three year Mt Lawn career in the MC Auto Repair Hornet finale.  In his victory lane interview Massengale dedicated his win to his Mom and Dad and to his wife Karol who had beaten him earlier in the year in the Massengale grudge match.  Massengale was followed by Brian Slavey of New Castle, Keith Morris of New Castle, Hornet point leader Brian Lewis of Indianapolis, Ryan Claborn of Cambridge City, Jeff Sorrell of New Castle, Doug Sorrell of Mooreland, Emily Henderson of New Castle, Joseph Jennings of Richmond and Graham Luhn of New Castle.

David McConnell of Shirley led the first three laps of the Mt Lawn Late Model feature giving the lead up on lap four to Ralph Lane of Greensburg.  Lane led the next three laps until Eric Evans took over on lap 7.  One of the several yellow flags of the race came out on lap 19 allowing Jeff Marcum of Morristown to restart the race along side of Evans.  Marcum gained the upper hand taking the lead on lap 20 and led the rest of the way.  Marcum was forced to the rear of the field after a body part from William Mefford’s car became lodged under his car.  Marcum was black flagged under a yellow allowing him to pit to remove the item and return to the race on the lead lap.  Evans finished second followed by Lane, David McConnell of Shirley, Scott Knepley of Greensboro, Brock Anderson of Albany, Bill Pierce of New Castle, Mefford of Knightstown and Bill Clark of Rushville.

In the UMRA midget feature Terry Goff of Fortville made it three in a row at Mt Lawn in 2010.  For a complete rundown of the midget results visit the UMRA website.

The Rookie Hornet feature went to Roger Clark of Shirley.  Clark took the lead on lap 7 and led the rest of the way for the win.  Clark was followed by Scott Reese of New Castle, Glen Ryan of New Castle, Josh Marlow of New Castle, Cory Slavey of New Castle, Scott Razor of New Castle, Scott Lewis of Indianapolis and an unnamed driver in Eric Evans’ Hornet.

In the Thompson Builders Thunder Car feature Neil Marcum of Morristown made it 13 out of 14 is 2010 by leading the final 11 laps of the 30 lap event.  Adam Bolyard of Rushville led lap one with Jason Walker of Sulphur Springs taking over on lap 2.  Walker led until Kevin Claborn of Cambridge City took over on lap 4.  Claborn was the class of the field over the next several laps but transmission problems caused him to leave the race on lap 12.  With Claborn’s exit Walker once again assumed the top spot.  Walker held the lead until Marcum took the top spot for good on lap 19.  Walker finished second followed by Jesse Bilbrey of Markleville, Andrew Walker of Sulphur, Bolyard, Paul Starks of Fortville, Chris Bolyard of Rushville, Claborn and Jack Claborn of Cambridge City.

The Lady Hornet feature was postponed until next week because the attrition for the previous Hornet races left only one car ready to take the green flag.
