Firecracker 50 finished turned upside down in tech
The apparent order of finish in the Firecracker 50 Thunder Car feature at Mt Lawn Speedway Saturday night changed as cars went the post-race technical inspection. Three of the top 5 finishers were disqualified after failing to pass tech after the race.
Kevin Claborn of Cambridge City took the lead of the race from Jim Walker of Cambridge City on lap three. Claborn held the top spot until Jameson Owens of Greenfield got around him on lap 43 when Claborn spun on the dogleg of the backstretch. Owens led the rest of the way to take the checkered flag first. Owens, Claborn and Kyle Evans of Shirley who crossed the finish line in 5th place were all disqualified from the event giving the win to Jason Walker of Sulphur Springs. Jim Walker finished second followed by Danny Key of Rushville, Dustin Foust of Rushville, Chris Bolyard of Rushville, Nick Warner of Anderson, Johnny Magee of Carthage, David Clark of Muncie, Mark West of Parker City and Johnny Williams of Rushville. Owens set fast time at 18.367; Jason Walker won the Dash for Cash with the heat races going to Jason Walker and Clark.
Andy Jennings of Richmond won the Hornet feature for the second time in 2012. Cody Riley of Middletown took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led the first 5 laps. Jeff Sorrell of New Castle got around Riley on when Riley had problems in the short turn. Sorrell led the next 12 laps until Jennings got around him on lap 18. Jennings led the rest of the way followed by Larry Hughes Jr. of Greensboro, Sorrell, Lenny Tungate of New Castle, Alex Bailey of New Castle, Randy Owen of Anderson, Keith Morris of New Castle, Brian Slavey of New Castle, Joseph Jennings of Richmond and Scott Kilgore of New Castle. Hughes set fast time at 19.499 and won the Dash for Cash. Hornet heat wins went to Andy and Joseph Jennings.
Ben Vandyke of Morristown won the Rookie Hornet feature for his fifth win this year. Vandyke got around John Shelton of New Castle on lap 14 of the 15 lap event to take the win. Shelton finished second followed by Ryan Reno of New Castle, Terry Neal of New Castle, Cody Slavey of New Castle and John Sexton of Greenfield. Vandyke won the Dash for Cash with Shelton winning the heat.
The Street Drag championship for the evening went to Steve Allen of New Castle driving a 1998 Corvette. Allen beat Hornet driver Alex Bailey by a nose in the finals. Bailey was wheeling a 1997 Chevy Cavalier.
Big wheel race winners were Logan Reno, Clayton Reno and Dustin Hill. Second place finishes went to Kane Knepley, Colton West and Jalen Slavey with the third place going to Cohen West, Kennedy Knepley and Rachel Nixon.
