Cody Riley wins Stock Compact 50 at Mt Lawn
Cody Riley of Middletown won the 50 lap feature for the Stock Compacts Saturday night with plenty of drama mixed in. Twenty one of the twenty three Stock Compacts took the green flag with Trey Thompson who started on the front row leading lap 1. On lap 2 Brock Smith of Richmond took the lead and led the next 4 laps when Kaiden Claborn of Cambridge City slipped by him for the lead. Claborn would lead the next 19 laps with Chuck Cook of Wilkinson all over him from lap 8 to 24 with Kaiden’s father Kevin in a close third. Cook who was fast qualifier tried Claborn high several times only to run out of race track forcing him to back off. Cook also tried low only to be squeezed down to the bottom of the track out of the groove and could not make the pass. Finally on lap 25 the top three got together on the backstretch and when the dust cleared all three cars would spend the rest of the night in the pits, out of the race. On the restart at lap 25 Chris Gray of Greenfield inherited the lead only to be overtaken by Riley on lap 29. Riley would lead the rest of the way for the win followed by Darrell Thompson Jr of New Castel, Jarrett Smith of New Castle, Adam Lee of Westwood, Cody Massengale of New Castle, David Powell of Anderson, Trey Thompson of New Castle, Chris Morris of New Castle and Robert Bryan of Greenfield rounding out the top ten. There were no heats in the Stock Compact Division.
In the Modified Division Tyler Marsh of Muncie would lead the first lap of their 30 lap event. Marsh’s lead was short lived though as Andrew Evans of Shirley got around him for the lead a lead that he would not give up. It wasn’t easy for Evans as Brandon Mefford of Knightstown got around Austin Evans for second on lap 7 and put heavy pressure on the leader the rest of the way. In the end Mefford had to settle for second followed by Austin, Brent Sutton, Marsh, Billy Hayes, Don Skaggs, Randy Anderson, Ohio driver Patrick Woods and Rodney Hammonds in tenth. Hayes and Mefford won the heats while Austin Evans had fast time at 17.119.
In the Crown Vic feature Shane Isaacs led all 20 laps to capture his first feature win at Mt Lawn. Twenty one cars started the event and the cars the top 16 qualifiers were separated by less than a second making it very difficult for the top qualifiers to work their way through traffic to get to the front. Isaacs was followed by Korbin Magee, Chuck Cook, Jonas Gordon, Chase Sutton, TJ Callaway, JD Blankenship, Nick Warner, Kyle Evans and Collin Sutton. All top 16 qualifiers finish on the lead lap. Isaacs and Blankenship won the heats with Lee setting fast time at 19.302.
Adam Lee of Westwood picked up the Pro Comp feature win leading the final 16 laps for the win. Cody Riley led lap 1-2, Kevin Claborn led lap 3 then it was Lee’s race the rest of the way. Nathan Gwinn of New Castle finished second followed by Shaylon Calciano of Kennard, Claborn, Chris Gray of Greenfield, Kaiden Claborn, Dylan Hoppes of Markleville, Matt Rowe of New Castle and Riley. Calciano won the heat and set fast time at 18.606.
The next races at Mt Lawn are scheduled for Saturday night September 28th with Modifieds, Crown Vics, Pro Compacts and Stock Compacts.
